What is Bull Trap in Crypto Futures and How to Identify It?

A Bull Trap is one of the most dangerous patterns in crypto futures — and one of the most common ways retail traders lose money near market tops.
It happens when price breaks above a key resistance level, triggering excitement and FOMO buying. But the breakout is fake. Smart money is quietly selling into the move, and price reverses sharply — leaving late buyers trapped with losing positions.

How to identify it:

Four warning signs appear together on the daily timeframe;
Price breaks above resistance with a large green candle — looks convincingly bullish on the surface.

Whale Delta turns negative. This is the most critical signal. While retail buys aggressively, large players are selling into the excitement with market orders.

Open Interest spikes during the breakout, then drops rapidly as longs get liquidated on the reversal.

Funding Rate hits extreme positive levels — a sign the market is overloaded with leveraged longs, making it fragile.

Why it matters:

The Bull Trap works because it exploits human psychology. A breakout above resistance feels like confirmation — but without whale delta support, it is a setup for distribution, not accumulation.

The rule is simple: never chase a breakout before checking who is behind it. If price is rising but whale delta is falling, you are likely walking into a trap.

How to avoid it:

Wait for a breakout candle to close and hold above resistance for at least one full daily candle. If whale delta stays negative during the move, stay out or consider a short after market structure shifts downward.
