What is a Long Liquidation Cascade in Crypto Futures and How to Identify It?
A Long Liquidation Cascade — often called a Waterfall Selloff — is one of the most violent and fast-moving events in crypto futures. It is not a normal downtrend. It is a chain reaction where each liquidation forces the next one, and the next one forces another, until the fuel runs out.
It starts when the market is dangerously overloaded with leveraged long positions. A single trigger — a large sell order, a negative news event, or a key support break — starts the process. As price drops, the first wave of longs gets liquidated. Their forced selling pushes price lower. This triggers the next liquidation level. And so on.
How to identify it:
Open Interest is extremely high before the event — the market is overloaded with leverage, making it fragile and vulnerable to any shock.
The trigger candle is large and sudden — not a gradual decline, but an aggressive drop that breaks a key support level with high volume.
OI collapses rapidly during the cascade as position after position is forcibly closed. This is the defining signal — OI was high, now it is crashing.
Funding Rate spikes briefly positive as the cascade begins — a sign that longs are still being liquidated, not that buyers are returning.
The most important rule:
Never try to catch a falling knife inside a cascade. The move accelerates — it does not slow down gradually. Wait for OI to stabilize at a low level and for price to consolidate sideways for at least three candles before considering any entry.
