What is a Bear Trap and Stop Hunt (SFP) in Crypto Futures and How to Identify It?
A Bear Trap — also known as a Stop Hunt or Swing Failure Pattern (SFP) — is one of the most calculated moves in crypto markets. It is not random volatility. It is a deliberate engineered move designed to shake out weak hands and collect liquidity before price reverses sharply higher.
It happens when price briefly breaks below a key support level — triggering stop losses from long positions and tempting sellers to open new shorts. But the breakdown is fake. Smart money is waiting at that level to absorb all the selling. Once the liquidity is collected, price snaps back above support with force — leaving sellers trapped in losing short positions.
How to identify it:
A long wick breaks below a key support level on the daily or 4H chart — but the candle closes back above it. The body stays above support. Only the shadow went below. This is the defining visual signal of an SFP.
Whale Delta spikes sharply positive during or immediately after the wick. This is the most critical confirmation — large players were aggressively buying at the exact moment price was breaking down.
Open Interest drops briefly during the stop hunt as long stops are triggered, then recovers quickly as new longs enter.
Volume spikes on the SFP candle — the high volume confirms genuine absorption, not a continuation breakdown.
The entry rule:
Wait for the SFP candle to fully close back above the support level. Do not enter during the wick. Enter only after the close confirms the trap — with a stop loss placed below the lowest point of the wick.
