What is Wyckoff Accumulation in Crypto and How to Identify It?
Wyckoff Accumulation is one of the oldest and most reliable frameworks in trading — developed by Richard Wyckoff in the 1930s and still highly relevant in crypto markets today. It describes the process by which smart money quietly builds large positions before a major price advance, without revealing their intentions to the crowd.
The core idea is simple: after a downtrend, big players need to buy large amounts without driving price up against themselves. So they engineer a sideways range, absorb all available supply, and only allow price to rise once their accumulation is complete.
The five key phases:
Selling Climax (SC): A sharp panic drop with extreme volume marks the end of the downtrend. Smart money begins absorbing supply here.
Automatic Rally (AR): Price bounces sharply from the climax low — this sets the top of the trading range.
Secondary Test (ST): Price returns to test the climax low on lower volume, confirming support is holding.
Spring: A brief false breakdown below support — the final Bear Trap designed to shake out weak holders and collect last available supply.
Sign of Strength (SOS) — Breakout: Price breaks above the top of the range on rising volume. Accumulation is complete. The advance begins.
The trading rule:
Patience is the only strategy inside a Wyckoff range. Buy in the lower third of the range and add on the breakout above resistance with strong volume confirmation.
