What is Wyckoff Distribution in Crypto and How to Identify It?

Wyckoff Distribution is the opposite of Wyckoff Accumulation — and arguably more dangerous. It is the process by which smart money quietly sells massive positions near the top of a bull run, offloading their holdings to retail buyers who still believe the uptrend will continue.
By the time most traders realize distribution has occurred, the markdown has already begun and it is too late to exit at good prices.

The five key phases:
Buying Climax (BC): An explosive rally on high volume marks the top. Smart money is selling aggressively into retail FOMO. This candle looks like a breakout — it is actually the exit.

Automatic Reaction (AR): Price drops sharply as buying pressure exhausts itself. This sets the bottom of the trading range.

Secondary Test (ST): A weak rally back toward the BC high on low volume. The failure to reclaim the high confirms distribution is underway.

UTAD — Upthrust After Distribution: The most dangerous phase. Price briefly breaks above resistance — triggering breakout buyers — then reverses sharply back inside the range. This is the final Bull Trap before the decline.

Sign of Weakness (SOW): Price breaks below range support with strong volume. Distribution is complete. The markdown begins.

Three warning signs to watch:
Volume shrinks progressively during the sideways range — smart money is selling quietly, not buying. Whale Delta turns persistently negative throughout the range. Each rally attempt fails with weaker and weaker momentum.

The trading rule:
Never buy a breakout above a long sideways range without checking whale delta. If delta is negative during the breakout, you are likely watching a UTAD — the last trap before a major decline.
