What is Passive Absorption in Crypto and How to Identify It?
Passive Absorption is the most invisible form of smart money accumulation — and one of the most powerful setups in crypto trading. Unlike Aggressive Absorption where whales buy openly with market orders, Passive Absorption happens in silence. Large players place massive hidden limit buy orders at a key level and quietly absorb every unit of supply that arrives — without making a single move that shows up aggressively in the data.
The result is a price that simply refuses to fall, despite clear and continuous selling pressure. To the untrained eye, it looks like a boring sideways market. To the informed trader, it is a wall of institutional demand holding the floor.
How to identify it:
Price holds stubbornly at a support level despite repeated selling attempts. Sellers push down — price bounces back to the same level every time. The floor is being defended, but you cannot see who is defending it.
CVD stays flat during the absorption phase. This is the critical clue that separates Passive Absorption from Aggressive Absorption. Because whales are using limit orders — not market orders — their buying does not show up in Cumulative Volume Delta. CVD reflects market orders only. Hidden limit buys are invisible to CVD.
Sell-side volume remains elevated while price refuses to decline. High volume with no price movement is the clearest sign that a large buyer is absorbing every offer.
Whale Delta stays near neutral during absorption — confirming limit order activity rather than aggressive market buying.
The signal to act:
When sell flow finally dries up — visible as a sudden drop in volume at the support level — the absorption phase is ending. Supply is exhausted. The breakout follows rapidly, often with a sharp spike in whale delta as the move begins.
Enter long when volume drops at support and the first strong green candle closes above the absorption range. Stop loss below the support level.
